Marguerite Duras, born Marguerite Germaine Marie Donnadieu, was a French novelist, playwright, screenwriter, essayist and experimental filmmaker who lived from 1914 to 1996. Her screenplay for the 1959 film Hiroshima mon amour earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, part of a body of work across fiction and film that made her one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth century French literature and cinema.
