French Literature

Literature written in French by authors of France, from the Enlightenment through the twentieth century avant-garde. Belongs here: the great French novelists, poets, dramatists and philosophes, and the Paris-centered movements such as Surrealism and Dada. Does not belong here: a Francophone author writing from outside France itself, such as the Negritude poets, placed under postcolonial African and Caribbean literature because their subject and standpoint is that tradition even though their language is French.
