Andre Breton was a French poet, essayist and the principal theorist of Surrealism, which he co-founded in Paris. His 1924 Manifesto of Surrealism, published alongside the founding of the magazine La Revolution surrealiste, defined the movement's aim of liberating the unconscious mind through automatic writing and dream imagery, and he remained its central organizing figure for over four decades.
