Yo-Yo Boing!

Realist and Literary Fiction

Yo-Yo Boing! is a 1998 novel by Giannina Braschi, written in a mix of English, Spanish and Spanglish and often described as the first full length novel to use Spanglish as a literary language. The book moves between poetry, political philosophy, memoir and drama, and unfolds largely through dialogues among unnamed voices that address tensions between Anglo American and Hispanic American cultures. Its subjects include racial, ethnic and sexual prejudice, discrimination, colonialism, Puerto Rican independence, domestic violence and writer's block, alongside references to film, popular culture and Puerto Rican artistic life in New York.
