When I Lived in Modern Times is a 2000 historical novel by the British writer Linda Grant, published by Granta Books, which won the Orange Prize for Fiction that year. It follows a young Jewish woman from London who emigrates to the future state of Israel in 1946 and lives through the birth of the nation, first on a kibbutz and later in Tel Aviv. After the novel won the Orange Prize, accusations of plagiarism were raised against Grant, though these were disputed on the basis that the passages in question had been referenced with the agreement of the original publisher.
