The Whisperer in Darkness

Speculative Fiction

The Whisperer in Darkness is a novella by American writer H. P. Lovecraft, written between February and September 1930 and first published in the August 1931 issue of Weird Tales. It blends horror with science fiction, marking a shift in Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos writing toward extraterrestrial rather than purely supernatural menace, and introduces the Mi-Go, an alien race of fungoid creatures who harvest human brains for interstellar travel. The story follows a Vermont folklorist drawn into investigating reports of strange creatures in the hills near his home.
