The 1963 debut novel of the Peruvian writer and Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, published in Spanish as La ciudad y los perros (literally The City and the Dogs). Set among cadets at a Lima military academy modeled on one Vargas Llosa himself attended, it exposes the institution's brutality and corruption through interwoven, shifting points of view, and its publication provoked outrage among Peru's military establishment, which publicly burned copies of the book.
