The Plague (La Peste, 1947) is Albert Camus's novel of a fictional cholera epidemic sealing off the Algerian city of Oran, read on publication as an allegory of the French experience under Nazi occupation and resistance, and read since as a meditation on collective suffering and solidarity more broadly.
