The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, published in 1968 by Houghton Mifflin, is the debut novel of the Ghanaian writer Ayi Kwei Armah. Narrated through an unnamed man navigating corruption and moral compromise in newly independent Ghana, it examines the gap between the promise of independence and the realities of everyday life under a political class Armah portrays as having betrayed that promise. Armah has said the title draws on the ancient Egyptian myth of Osiris, invoking ideas of unity, cooperative action and renewal. The novel established Armah's international reputation on the strength of this single book and remains one of the most discussed works of postcolonial African fiction.
