Memed, My Hawk, published in Turkish in 1955 as Ince Memed, is the debut novel of the Turkish writer Yasar Kemal and the first book of his Ince Memed tetralogy; an English translation by Edouard Roditi appeared in 1961. Set among Anatolian villagers under the rule of an oppressive landlord, it follows the young Memed as he is driven to become an outlaw fighting against exploitation and injustice in the countryside. The novel won Turkey's Varlik Prize and established Kemal's reputation at home, and its English translation gave him his first international audience, helping make him one of the best known Turkish novelists abroad.
