Lolita is a 1955 novel written by the Russian and American novelist Vladimir Nabokov, whose protagonist and narrator is a French literature professor who moves to New England and writes under the pseudonym Humbert Humbert, detailing his obsession with and victimization of a twelve-year-old girl, Dolores Haze, whom he privately calls Lolita. The novel was written in English, but fear of censorship in the United States, where Nabokov lived, and in Britain led to its first publication in Paris, France, in 1955 by Olympia Press; despite the controversy it caused with the public it has received wide critical acclaim, been included on numerous best-book lists including Time's List of the 100 Best Novels and Modern Library's 100 Best Novels, and been twice adapted into film, first by Stanley Kubrick in 1962 and later by Adrian Lyne in 1997.
