Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta

Realist and Literary Fiction

Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta is a novel by Giovanni Boccaccio, probably written between 1343 and 1344 and often described as the first psychological novel in Western literature. Framed as a first person confessional monologue, it follows Lady Fiammetta of Naples as she recounts her tragic love affair with the Florentine merchant Panfilo. After their brief romance ends with his return to Florence, Fiammetta is consumed by jealousy and despair on learning of his infidelity, and the novel dwells on her emotional turmoil, including a contemplated suicide her nurse prevents, before closing on her renewed hope that Panfilo might return.
