Dona Barbara

Dona Barbara is a novel by the Venezuelan writer Romulo Gallegos, published in Spanish in February 1929 and often called the most widely read novel in Latin American literature. A regionalist novel set on the plains, or llanos, of Venezuela, it dramatizes the conflict between civilization and the untamed rural frontier through its title character, a powerful and feared landowner, blending vernacular speech with literary prose to give a psychological portrait of a people shaped by hardship. Gallegos researched the setting during a visit to the llanos of only about eight days, yet the novel is credited with capturing the character of the region with unusual authenticity, and it stands as a landmark of Venezuelan and broader Latin American fiction.
