Devdas (novel)

Devdas is a Bengali novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, published on 30 June 1917, centered on a tragic love triangle among Devdas, an archetypal lover consumed by separation from his beloved, Parvati, his forbidden childhood love, and Chandramukhi, a courtesan who reforms her life for his sake. Set in early twentieth century Bengal under British rule, it examines how rigid class distinctions and social convention destroy the possibility of the lovers' union. The novel has been adapted for film more than twenty times across Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Assamese and Malayalam cinema, making it, by some counts, the most filmed non-epic story in India.
