A novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, serialized in twelve monthly installments in The Russian Messenger during 1866 and published as a separate edition in 1867. It follows Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished former student in Saint Petersburg, through the murder of a pawnbroker he commits to test a theory of moral exceptionalism and the psychological torment and eventual confession that follow, and is regarded as one of the foundational works of Russian realist fiction.
