Nivola is a term coined by Miguel de Unamuno for his own works, which contrasted with the realism prevalent in Spanish novels of the early twentieth century. Because his works were not fully novels, or novelas, in the conventional Spanish sense, Unamuno coined the new word nivola to describe them.
