Ryunosuke Akutagawa was a Japanese writer active in the Taisho period, who wrote under the art name Chokodo Shujin. He is regarded as the father of the Japanese short story, and Japan's premier literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, is named after him. His compact, ironic tales made him one of the most admired short-fiction writers of his country. He took his own life at the age of thirty-five, by an overdose of barbital.
