FAQs

Is The Lover by Marguerite Duras autobiographical?

Largely, but not as a plain record of events. Encyclopedia.com's biographical entry says The Lover is recognizably autobiographical and explores her childhood in French Indochina and her difficult relationships with her overbearing mother and indolent brothers. It is often considered a revised version of her earlier novel The Sea Wall (1950), which is also set in Indochina and loosely based on an incident from her childhood. The entry says Duras focuses on recollecting events and their emotional significance rather than on the events themselves. She later told the story again as The North China Lover (1991), which began as a screenplay for Jean-Jacques Annaud's film of The Lover and covers the same story in a very different style and tone.
