Maj Sjöwall

Scandinavian and Nordic Literature

Maj Sjowall was a Swedish author and translator, born on 25 September 1935 and died on 29 April 2020. She is best known for her novels about the police detective Martin Beck, which she wrote in collaborative work with her partner Per Wahloo. Their series of police procedurals became a landmark of Swedish crime fiction, and Roseanna, the first of the Martin Beck novels, appeared in 1965. Her work as a translator ran alongside her writing, and her partnership with Per Wahloo produced a shared body of Martin Beck stories. She is recorded here as one of the pair who shaped Swedish crime writing.
