Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish writer who, although a prolific author of plays, travelogues, novels and poems, is best remembered for his literary fairy tales. His 156 fairy tales across nine volumes have been translated into more than 125 languages and include some of the best-known stories in the Western tradition, among them The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Snow Queen. His stories have since inspired ballets, plays, and animated and live-action films worldwide.
