Aristophanes was an Ancient Greek comic playwright from Athens who lived from about 446 BC to about 386 BC. He wrote forty plays, of which eleven survive virtually complete, and the majority of the surviving plays belong to the genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, of which they are considered the most valuable examples. His plays were performed at the religious festivals of Athens, mostly the City Dionysia and the Lenaia, and several of them won first prize. Known as the Father of Comedy, he often dealt with real-life figures such as Euripides and Alcibiades and with contemporary events such as the Peloponnesian War.
