Ancient and Classical Literature

Literature of Greek and Latin antiquity and the ancient Near East, the root tradition every later Western literary form answers to. Belongs here: the Homeric and Hesiodic epic tradition, Attic tragedy and the classical lyric, Roman epic and verse, and the earliest attested named author voices such as Sumerian temple poetry. Does not belong here: a later author who merely writes in a classical form (an epic poet of the nineteenth century, for instance), who is placed by the language and nation they actually wrote in.
