Utopia

A work of fiction and socio-political satire by Thomas More, written in Latin and first published in 1516, then revised in 1518. It describes a fictional island society, Utopia, visited and reported on by a traveler named Raphael Hythloday, using the imagined community's customs, property arrangements and laws to hold up a mirror to, and implicitly critique, the political and religious conditions of More's own sixteenth-century Europe; the book gave the English language its word for an ideal, imagined society.
