The First Men in the Moon is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, serialized in The Strand Magazine and The Cosmopolitan from November 1900 to June 1901 before its 1901 book publication. It follows businessman Mr. Bedford and the eccentric scientist Mr. Cavor, who invents a gravity blocking substance called cavorite and uses it to build a spherical spacecraft that carries the pair to the Moon, where they discover the insect like Selenites living inside a hollow lunar interior. Wells described it as one of his fantastic stories, and the novel presents the Selenites' society as a strictly regimented hierarchy in which individuals are confined to specialized, predetermined roles. The book has been praised for combining adventure with social satire and for its vivid depiction of the lunar setting and its inhabitants.
