A collection of one hundred short stories by Giovanni Boccaccio, composed between about 1348 and 1353, subtitled Prince Galehaut. Ten young Florentines sheltering in the countryside from the Black Death each tell one story a night for ten nights, and the resulting frame narrative, ranging from bawdy comedy to tragedy, is regarded as a masterpiece of early Italian prose and a major influence on later European storytelling, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
