A series of aphoristic prose pieces by the American transcendentalist Amos Bronson Alcott, patterned after the work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published in the first issue of the Transcendentalist journal The Dial in 1840. Its dense, elliptical style drew wide ridicule at the time, becoming a byword among Alcott's contemporaries for the movement's more obscure excesses.
