How did Woman in the Nineteenth Century grow from a magazine essay into a book?
Horace Greeley encouraged Fuller to expand her 1843 Dial essay, and about one-third of the 1845 book was new.
Margaret Fuller began the essay on a trip to Chicago in 1843 and published it in serial form in The Dial, the transcendentalist journal she edited, under the title The Great Lawsuit. The publisher Horace Greeley was impressed and encouraged her to rewrite it as a full-length book. About one-third of the book-length version was new, and it appeared in 1845 as Woman in the Nineteenth Century.
