Critic, journalist and the first editor of the Transcendentalist periodical The Dial (1840-1842), succeeded in that role by Emerson. Author of Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1845), the first major work of American feminist thought. Died in a shipwreck off Fire Island, New York, in 1850.
