The Turn of the Screw is an 1898 Gothic horror novella by Henry James, first serialized in Collier's Weekly and then collected that October in The Two Magics. It follows a governess who, caring for two children at a remote country house, becomes convinced that the children are haunted. Critical interpretation of the novella shifted over the twentieth century, moving from an initial reading as a straightforward ghost story to arguments in the 1930s that its supernatural elements might be the governess's own imagination, and later readings shaped by structuralist, Marxist, and feminist criticism. The story has been adapted as a Broadway play in 1950, a chamber opera in 1954, two films, and a 2020 miniseries.
