The Prisoner of the Caucasus

Short Fiction and Fable

The Prisoner of the Caucasus, also translated as A Prisoner in the Caucasus, is an 1872 novella by Leo Tolstoy written for his ABC book and composed in deliberately simplified language for rural children. Tolstoy based the story on an incident from the Caucasian War that happened to him personally near Grozny in June 1853, and its title alludes to Alexander Pushkin's 1821 poem of the same name. It is included in the English language collection Twenty-Three Tales.
