What are Ah Q's spiritual victories?
They are Ah Q's habit of turning every defeat into an imagined win through self-deception.
Ah Q is famous for his spiritual victories, which Lu Xun used as a euphemism for self-talk and self-deception even when facing extreme defeat or humiliation. In one scene Ah Q is beaten and has his silver taels stolen while gambling. He slaps himself on the face, and because he is the one doing the slapping, he sees himself as the victor. Lu Xun presents these faults as symptoms of the Chinese national character of his time.
