Why is Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out told through animals?

Ximen Nao is reincarnated as a series of animals and keeps his memories of past lives.

The narrator is Ximen Nao, a landlord known for being unusually kind to those less fortunate than him, who is nonetheless executed for being a landlord. After being tortured in hell for two years, he is reincarnated into a series of animals: a donkey, an ox, a pig, a dog and briefly a monkey. Unusually, he retains his memories of past lives.
