Maigret Sets a Trap is a detective novel by the Belgian-born writer Georges Simenon, published in French in 1955 under the title Maigret tend un piege, part of his long-running series following Chief Inspector Jules Maigret of the Paris police. In this installment Maigret, under pressure after a string of unsolved murders of women in Montmartre, devises a deliberate scheme to lure the killer into exposing himself by making a mistake, rather than pursuing the case through conventional evidence gathering. Published by Presses de la Cite between Maigret and the Headless Corpse and Maigret's Failure, the novel is one of many dozens Simenon wrote in the Maigret series and reflects the psychologically attentive, character-driven style of investigation for which the series became internationally known.
