A jointly assembled collection of poems by Coleridge and Wordsworth, published anonymously in 1798 and expanded with a second volume and Wordsworth's own critical Preface in 1800, conventionally treated as the founding document of English Romanticism. It opens with Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and closes with Wordsworth's Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, and its Preface called for poetry in the real language of ordinary men rather than the elevated diction of eighteenth century verse.
