Les Fleurs du mal

Poetry

A volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire, first published in 1857 and gathering nearly all of his poetry written from 1840 until his death. Its frank treatment of sex, decadence and death led to an obscenity prosecution in France that same year, which resulted in the removal of six poems from the collection, and it is now regarded as a landmark of French verse and an influence on the Symbolist and Decadent movements that followed. Baudelaire and his publisher were prosecuted under the Second Empire for an insult to public decency, and Baudelaire was fined 300 francs. Six poems from the work were suppressed, and the ban on their publication was not lifted in France until 1949.
