A long poem by Allen Ginsberg, written in 1954-1955 and published in his 1956 collection Howl and Other Poems. Its long, incantatory lines depict a generation of Ginsberg's friends and contemporaries destroyed by the pressures of postwar American conformity, and its 1957 obscenity trial, brought against publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti and resolved in the poem's favor, made it a landmark case for literary free expression and one of the defining texts of the Beat Generation.
