The Rose of Sharon Blooms Again

Realist and Literary Fiction

The Rose of Sharon Blooms Again is a 1993 South Korean novel by Kim Chin-myong that became a bestseller, selling over three million copies and topping sales rankings for weeks in 1994. Its story follows a South Korean physicist, Lee Yong-hoo, modeled on the real scientist Benjamin W. Lee, who is killed after covertly helping both South and North Korea develop nuclear capability out of a wish to protect the Korean peninsula from Japanese aggression, and the novel expresses themes of Korean reunification and national pride. Plagiarism allegations followed its success, but South Korean courts rejected the claims in 1997.
