The Manchurian Candidate

Detective and Crime Fiction

The Manchurian Candidate is a 1959 political thriller novel by American writer Richard Condon, published by McGraw-Hill. It follows Raymond Shaw, the son of a prominent political family, who has been secretly brainwashed by a Communist conspiracy while a prisoner during the Korean War and turned into an unwitting assassin. The novel's title refers not to Shaw but to Senator Johnny Iselin, a demagogic politician modeled on Senator Joseph McCarthy, whose rise to power is engineered by the same conspiracy that controls Shaw. The book has been adapted into two feature films with differing political emphases.
