Sea Prayer

Poetry

Sea Prayer is an illustrated book by Afghan American writer Khaled Hosseini, first created as a virtual reality experience in 2017 before its publication as a book in 2018 with watercolor illustrations by Dan Williams. Written as a father's address to his sleeping son on the night before their journey across the sea, it was inspired by the Syrian refugee crisis and, in particular, by the death of the Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi. The short lyrical text is set against Williams's illustrations, which shift between the son's peaceful Syrian home before the war and the perilous departure the family faces.
