The Snow Queen, published in Danish as Snedronningen, is an 1844 original fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published 21 December 1844. The story centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend Kai, and is written in a novel-styled narrative divided into seven chapters, unlike Andersen's other stories. It is one of Andersen's longest and most highly acclaimed stories, regularly included in selected tales and collections of his work and frequently reprinted in illustrated storybook editions for children. Why does Kai turn cruel in The Snow Queen?
A splinter of the troll's distorting mirror lodges in his heart and eye.
Splinters of a magic mirror get into Kai's heart and eye. The mirror was made by a devil in the form of a troll and distorts what it reflects, magnifying the bad and ugly aspects of people and things. It shattered into billions of pieces while its makers carried it toward Heaven, and the splinters left people with a cold and bitter disposition. Once the splinters lodge in Kai he becomes cruel and aggressive: he destroys the window-box garden he shared with Gerda, makes fun of her grandmother and stops caring for Gerda, since everyone now appears bad and ugly to him.
