The Sorrow of War is a novel by the Vietnamese writer Bao Ninh, first published in Vietnam in 1990 under the title The Destiny of Love, drawing on Ninh's own service as a soldier with the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War. The novel follows Kien, a veteran assigned after the war to recover the remains of soldiers killed in the Central Highlands, as his mind moves in fragmented, nonlinear sequence between the war's brutal combat, the devastation of his unit, and his prewar relationship with his lost love Phuong, whose own wartime trauma parallels his, building a portrait of a man unable to leave the war behind even as peacetime civilian life continues around him. Breaking sharply with the heroic, ideologically affirmative war narrative expected of Vietnamese literature at the time, the novel presents war's psychological devastation and moral compromise without triumphalism, a stance that made it controversial in Vietnam on release even as it became an international literary sensation once translated. Alongside Nguyen Du's classical epic poem The Tale of Kieu, The Sorrow of War is one of the two Vietnamese literary works with the widest international recognition, and it remains one of the most widely translated and read Vietnamese novels ever published.

How did The Sorrow of War reach English readers?
Through an English version by Frank Palmos based on Phan Thanh Hao's raw translation.
After Bao Ninh finished the manuscript it circulated in Hanoi in a roneo duplicated form and was published in 1990 as The Destiny of Love. Phan Thanh Hao decided to translate it into English, and her English manuscript reached Geoffrey Mulligan, then an editor at Secker and Warburg in London. Mulligan commissioned Frank Palmos, an Australian war correspondent who had covered the Vietnam war, to write an English version based on Hao's raw translation. That version was published in English in 1994.
