Robert Graves

British and Irish Literature

Robert Ranke Graves was an English poet, novelist and critic. His father was Alfred Perceval Graves, a celebrated Irish poet and figure in the Gaelic revival, and both were Celticists and students of Irish mythology. Born in 1895 and dying in 1985, Graves produced a very large body of work, and his historical novel I, Claudius remains among his best-known books. He wrote more than one hundred and forty works in his lifetime, and his poems, translations, analysis of the Greek myths, his memoir Good-Bye to All That of 1929 and his study of poetic inspiration, The White Goddess of 1948, have never been out of print.
