Leo Tolstoy

Russian and Slavic Literature

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, usually known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer regarded as one of the greatest and most influential authors of all time. Born to an aristocratic family, he achieved acclaim in his twenties with the semi-autobiographical trilogy Childhood, Boyhood and Youth (1852-1856) and went on to write War and Peace (1869), Anna Karenina (1878) and Resurrection (1899), often cited among the greatest novels ever written. In the 1870s he underwent a profound moral and spiritual crisis that turned him into a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist, and his writing on nonviolent resistance influenced later figures including Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

FAQs

Did Leo Tolstoy ever win the Nobel Prize?

He was nominated repeatedly for both the literature and peace prizes but never won either.

No. Tolstoy was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906, and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902 and 1909, but he was never awarded a Nobel Prize. That omission remains a major Nobel Prize controversy.
