A series of nineteen devotional poems, also known as the Divine Meditations or Divine Sonnets, by the English poet John Donne, written mainly around 1609 to 1610 during a period of personal and spiritual crisis. Composed in the Petrarchan sonnet form but turned to urgent religious address rather than romantic love, they are considered central to Donne's reputation as the foremost of the Metaphysical Poets. Manuscripts and early printings of the Holy Sonnets vary: the poems are listed in different orders and some are omitted. In his Variorum edition of Donne's poetry, Gary A. Stringer proposed that there were three sequences for the sonnets, and only eight of the sonnets appear in all three versions.
