Herbert George Wells was an English writer who worked in many genres and produced more than forty novels along with dozens of short stories. Beyond fiction he wrote social commentary, politics, history, popular science, satire, biography and autobiography. He is most known today for his science fiction. He has sometimes been called the father of science fiction, a title also given to Jules Verne. He was also prominent in his lifetime as a forward-looking social critic who devoted his talents to a progressive vision on a global scale, and as a futurist he wrote utopian works and foresaw aircraft, tanks and space travel.
