Alessandro Manzoni

Italian Literature

Alessandro Manzoni (1785 to 1873) was an Italian philosopher, poet, playwright, and novelist best known for the novel The Betrothed (I promessi sposi), published in 1827 and ranked among the masterpieces of world literature. The novel became a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento for its patriotic message and served as a milestone in the development of a modern, unified Italian language, a project Manzoni actively championed as an influential proponent of linguistic unity across Italy. He was also a leading figure of Liberal Catholicism in Italy and is counted, alongside Ugo Foscolo and Giacomo Leopardi, among the three crowns of Italian Romanticism, despite real differences in outlook between him and Leopardi.
