Pan Tadeusz

Poetry

Pan Tadeusz, in full Sir Thaddeus, or the Last Foray in Lithuania: A Nobility's Tale of the Years 1811-1812, in Twelve Books of Verse, is an epic poem of about 10,000 lines in rhyming Polish alexandrine couplets by the poet Adam Mickiewicz, first published in Paris on 28 June 1834. It is regarded as one of the last great epic poems of European literature and as Poland's national epic, and its opening invocation, O Lithuania, my country, is among the best known lines in Polish poetry. The poem has been translated into thirty three languages, is required reading in Polish schools, and was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register in 2014.
