Don Quixote

Realist and Literary Fiction

A Spanish novel in two parts (1605 and 1615) recounting the adventures of Alonso Quixano, an aging gentleman who reads himself into believing he is the knight-errant Don Quixote and sets out with his squire Sancho Panza to revive chivalry. Written in direct response to the chivalric romances popular in Cervantes' own time, it uses their conventions against themselves, turning windmills into giants only in its hero's mind, and is widely credited by literary historians as a founding work of the modern novel for its self-aware narration and its interweaving of comedy with a genuinely sympathetic portrait of its deluded hero.

Romance, Genres

Romance's own entity-description already states that Cervantes wrote Don Quixote in direct response to the chivalric romances he had read, turning their plots to comic and critical effect; the work carried no edge recording this. Stance is critiques, matching Cervantes's own in-genre edge to Romance, which already carries the critiques stance.
