A Doll's House

Drama and Theatre

A three-act play in Danish/Bokmal by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, first performed at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen on 21 December 1879. It follows Nora Helmer, a wife and mother who comes to recognize the hollowness of her marriage and its social expectations, and its final scene, in which Nora walks out on her husband and children, provoked fierce controversy and made the play a foundational text of both dramatic realism and feminist literature. FAQs

Did A Doll's House ever have a different ending?

Yes. Ibsen wrote an altered ending for the first German productions in the 1880s at the producers' request.

Yes. The first German productions of the play in the 1880s used an altered ending that Ibsen wrote at the request of the producers. Nora's departure at the close had scandalized contemporary audiences, and Ibsen described the substitute version as a "barbaric outrage" to be used only in emergencies.
