Primary Text

The literary work itself, cited directly rather than through a summary or a critical discussion of it: a novel, poem, play or story consulted in its own text to verify a plot detail, a quoted line, a character's fate or a publication fact only the work itself settles. Belongs here: a citation to the primary literary text under discussion. Does not belong here: a scholarly edition's introduction or footnotes, tracked separately as Scholarly Edition Notes, or a searchable archive holding many such texts, tracked as Primary Text Archive.
